Corona Arch Domes

“Corona Arch domes’ is a name I give to a plateau of sandstone humps or domes that lies north of Corona and Bow Tie arches. (The plateau of domes is at the center of this Wikimapia aerial view.) From the very popular Corona Arch Trail most of the plateau is hidden from view. although hikers going to Corona Arch can see a little bit of the plateau when getting their first view of the arch (see first photo).

The plateau called to me, so I have explored parts of it. Getting there is much more involved than the hike to Corona Arch: a clockwise loop that starts in Culvert Canyon takes me about three hours one way. Hiking on the plateau is limited to the garden areas between domes and the gentler slopes of the domes themselves. Many slopes of the domes are too steep to be negotiated.

One 4x4 trail goes right to the north end of the domes; now and then motorcyclists venture briefly onto the plateau for roller coaster rides on the domes. In May 2014 I saw old motorcyle tracks in the dirt close to Pinto Arch---somebody had guts to accomplish that feat but also had little respect for the environment.

Newest uploads are at the BOTTOM of the page, but they stay there temporarily, then get moved elsewhere to fit in the "geographic chronology" of the photos.
