In September of 2009 I had an opportunity to spend a few days in the Havasupai area. I noticed a number of months ago that there seemed to be few sites on the Internet showing this area post-flood. There was only one on Pbase. I decided to rectify that situation by submitting a reservation and visiting the area.
For those who may not know, a flood in August 2008 caused widespread damage to the area. Many of the travertine terraces below the waterfalls were destroyed and one of the waterfalls (Navajo Falls) went dry after the river diverted course. In the place of Navajo Falls two new falls were created. One they named New Navajo Falls and another they named Rock Falls. While the area was closed to tourists for six months, the residents of Supai got to work repairing the damage. Some of that repair work included the artificial rebuilding of terraces using sandbags. Over the last several months mineral deposits have begun taking hold of the bags and it shouldn't take too long before the terraces will start to look truly natural. I'm amazed how well the recently constructed artificial terraces directly below the falls look after only a few months.
I have included eight images of Havasu Falls, five of Mooney Falls, three of Rock Falls, and two of New Navajo Falls. I have also included a lot of photos of terraces beyond Mooney Falls.
About five of the images are HDRs due to extreme exposure range. All images taken with a Digital Rebel XT with various L lenses.
