Almost all of these images are from the Florida State Archives but some are from other sources. I removed dust spots and lines, adjusted the levels and contrast, and removed JPG artifacts from each image and then downsized them for display in this gallery. This is a wonderful Gallery. With all the Pan American history books I bought, I have got more interesting images to view in this gallery. I remember several flights I took with the Pan Am newly introduced Boeing 747. It was a memorable experience to fly for the first time on a wide body "jumbo jet". Captain Keneth Newton Poe, ex PAA, was the pilot of DC-4 (C-54 serial number 10469), C-114 of Avianca (also ex PAA), that crashed NW of Bogotá, at Cerro El Tablazo, on Feb 17, 1947 en route Barranquilla-Bogotá. It was the worst commercial plane accident in the world at he time, with 53 people dead.

I worked fir Wilbur L. Morrison, Executive Vice President of Pan am after he retired in Miami. He had a ifiice in Coral Gables. IN the early 80's, he was quite old, but always shiwed uo to the office. He had loads of stories, and his roladex was filled with some interesting people, incliding Charles Linberg's widow! He was an interesting lovely man.

My father started working for Pan Am at Dinner Key in 1943 as motor pool driver and later became the supervisor for the Latin American Division. I remember visiting the Dinner Key operations, the 36th Street operations, and watching the repairs to the various Pan Am aircraft in the 36th Street hangers. I did fly out of the 36th Street terminal in 1953 or 54. I would go to the 20th Street tower and watch the air traffic controllers work and someone else said no though of terrorists. I also, had the opportunity of flying on a Pan Am cargo flight from Panama City, Panama to Miami. As the only passenger I was able to spend most of the time in the cockpit listening to the pilots.

In 1967 or 68 i took the pan am flight 1 i think it was around the world, LA to honolulu, honolulu to tokyo, tokyo to hong kong, hong kong to new delhi, new delhi to ankara, turkey via istanbul i think, ankara, turkey to rome, rome to london, and london new york. i only stayed over (you could schedule stopovers back then) in honolulu, tokyo, ankara, london was just flying thru the other cities. i did get off the plane in hong kong but did not stay over.

A real treat to find this site and the early PAA pics. My father, Captain Marion E. Dinsmore joined Pan American with their purchase of American Overseas Airlines. He transferred to MIA in 1951 and retired as a 727 Captain in 1973. He passed away in 2010 at age 96 with an aviation career that spanned from his solo in 1937 until a few years after retirement when he continued as a private flight instructor. I remember the old terminal, standing up over the ramp and the many tours I had of the Miami maintenance facility.

I was an eight year-old child aboard Pan Am flight 811 from LA to Sydney via Honolulu and Nadi, Fiji on Feb. 3, 1963 and back on 812 on May 30, 1963. I still keep the ticket receipts and recall the entire voyage aboard the Boeing 707 quite well. I had the fortune and pleasure to have boarded dozens of Pan Am 707s from the early 1960s right through 1980 and I really miss the white and blue! Keep the memories of the greatest airline in aviation history alive!

Just returned from Brownsville TX where Robert Hedrick is bringing back "Pan American Airways...starting with Cargo and 2011-12 with Pax. He invited some of us former PanAm employees...had heads of state from Mexico and a rep that Rick Perry send and politicians from South Texas. In 1960 I began employment with Pan-Am as a data processing machine operator in their accounting facility. Shortly thereafter it was announced that the facility would be closing and moving to the newly opened Pan-Am building in NYC. Knowing that there was no way I was going to move to NY, and not having enough seniority to be able to transfer to Patrick AFB in Melbourne Beach, FL where Pan-Am haad a support contract, I decided to rebel against joining the union, which was required after my trial period., thus saving initiation and back membership fees. It took six months to process my dismissal on grounds of failure to join the union, at which time I accepted employment from Riddle Airlines. At Riddle, our offices were at one end of a storage hangar which was very interesting to walk through on break, as Riddle was primarily a freight carrier and the hangar was usually full of South American monkeys, birds, and large cats being shipped throughout the country. Also crate after crate of baby chicks. There would sometimes be the occasional coffin covered with flowers and race cars being flown to Nassau for the Governor's Cup Races. I stayed at Riddle for two years until I beat the draft by enlisting in the Air Force.

Scott, the old images are too small in size and resolution for making decent sized prints. They're great for display here on this site, and I have enlarged some of them just to do that, but they are not suitable for prints. I visited the Pan American Terminal at Dinner Key many times when I was a kid. I was greatly impressed with the "Globe of the World" turning in the main terminal and we watched the Clippers come and go all through WWII along with military seaplanes. My Dad (Gordon Thomas Davis, Sr.) was a Photographers Mate 1st. in the Navy stationed at Boca Chica Naval Air in Key West and used to come home on the weekends in a Navy PPY and Sometimes a PBM. My Mom, Sister and I would pick him up at Dinner Key. When he couldn't get a ride with the Navy, he would hitch a ride with the Army Air Corp. More than a few times I remember we picked him up at Amelia Airheart field as he came flying in from Key West in a B-25 Bomber. Later Dad was transferred to Richmond Naval Air Station where the sub hunting "Blimps" flew out of. Then called it The LTA (Lighter Than Air) Division. Dad flew recon as a Phoographer and also doubled as a Gunner on the single Browning .50 Cal Machinegun on board these submarine hunting blimps. Anyone out there remember the Richmon Naval Air Station Fire fire? Best to all; TOM DAVIS

Sissy, every old Pan American photo that I have is up on the site and I'm sorry to say that I don't recall the photo you are speaking of. Perhaps someday it will show up somewhere and I can then display it. Don

Hi Don, My grand father was one of the original clipper pilots and later chief pilot for Pan Am, Captain Cyril Goyette. There is a famous picture of him as a young navigator looking over the charts in the cockpit with a glass canopy roof before he was a captain. Do you have that picture anywhere? I would love to show it to my children. Sissy De Maria

Don, When I was in school at Gainesville in the late 30/s would visit my brother who was married and worked for Railey Milam Hardward store. We would go down to Dinner Key an watch the Pan Am Clippers land. Guys would go out in the water. Your pictures remind me to Miami in 1960 BC (Before Castro)

Wow! great collection of photos. My dad was a mechanic for PAA from1941 to 1986 He came from New York to the Miam airport in 1951 and stayed there until he retired after 45 years! Our whole family traveled worldwide thanks to Pan Am. What memories this brings back. Thanks

I forgot to mention that my wife Marie and her cousin Peggy Bogaard lived near the Dinner Key base and used to go down and they were permitted to go on the planes and make believe they were stewardesses. There were no terrorists in those days.

Pan-Am should have never died. My wife Marie worked for VP Wilbur Morrison at the Executive Office on N.W.South River Dr. with Margo McMenamin in the late 40's and early 50's. We built our first home nearby on N.W. 14th St. and 30th Ave. She walked to work every morning. She used to handle phone calls from famous people all over the world.

Hi Rambo, I didn't know that about you(C.G.res.) Do you remember the run we had to Mrs.Gomez's house on 22 Ave and Seacoffee St. She was the widow of a pilot who flew the Cuba routes and had walls of old pictures. She still lived in the old two story house on the corner. Too bad that's all gone now. Enjoy your retirement.

He was Chief Pilot as well as Manager of the South American District for Pan Am prior to returning to the States about 1939. He is installed in several Aviation Halls of Fame as well as other Halls of Fame. At his death in 1980, I inherited approximately 3500 negatives of his, mostly aviation. I have recently been going through boxes of photographs that my Mother (deceased 1995) had marked "Pan Am" "South America", etc., and have found some marvelous photographs. She had one box labeled "not wanted by Gen. Harold R. Harris", another Pan Am "great" from the early days. I just wish Dad were here to help ID these things for us. My Dad was a Check Airman and Instructor for PAA at Dinner Key from 1941 to 1948 and was flying the DC-3 NC 33611 on the second page. It was part of a series of publicity photos that were taken using that airplane. Later he flew the photo ship shooting pictures of the DC-4 over Biscayne Bay. During WW II he flew the Commodores, S-40s, DC-3s and several other types. I was in the Coast Guard res. and flew key patrol in 59,60 looking for Cuban boat poeple off the Fearther beds near Cuba. When we spotted them we called for a cutter from Key West to pick them up. My uncle, Victor A. Wright, was a crew member of the beautiful clipper ships (First Engineer on the first trans-Pacific flight). He used to take me to Dinner Key and actually take me onto the Clippers. Of course, I was quite young (about 3 years old), but I have photographs of me in the Hawaiian Clipper to keep those wonderful memories fresh. As time progressed, Pan Am moved to the 36th St. airport, and he continued to take me to the airport and through the planes. The smell of the hangars is one I would even now recognize instantly. "Going to the Airport" was part of my growing up experience in Miami, and one I greatly cherish. Your site has been a a wonderful excursion into my past. Nice to see these ------------------------------ Guest 12-Jun-2007 23:47 They look great to me on my CRT monitor at 1024 by 768 rez, much better than the few archive images I've seen that have spots, lines, overexposure, underexposure, etc. He's probably using a LCD monitor at 2048 by whatever so they're smaller on his screen. Photogs are not going to put bigger images on the net just because some folks can't figure out how to adjust their monitor's resolution. Those include people who don't know the difference between resolution and image size, ha! You've put a lot of work into getting these up on the net so don't let comments like this get you down, Don. They are two completely different things. I resample them to 72ppi (resolution) for display on the net and resize them to what they are because of file space considerations. The original images were not that much larger to begin with. Your comment about fullest resolution (I think you mean size) is simply not true.
