1949 - Crowds waiting to see Pan American's Boeing 377-10-26 Stratocruiser N1023V "Clipper America" at Miami

Miami International Airport, Florida

From the state archives description: "The arrival and public display of the Clipper America - first of the Boeing 377-type clippers - at Miami, Florida, was an important event in the history of aviation. Christened in Washington, D.C., by Margaret Truman, daughter of then President Harry S. Truman, the aircraft was brought to Miami on March 8, 1949. It remained on display for two days, during which time thousands flocked to inspect the huge, four-engine, double-decked clipper."

This Stratocruiser, c/n 15923, was later renamed "Clipper Golden Gate" and flew for Pan American from 1949 until 1958 when it was lost on landing at Manila, Philippines.

Pan Am also used the name "Clipper America" for its first 707. Clipper America (N711PA) flew on 26 October 1958 from New York Idlewild to Paris Le Bourget.
