1930 - Pan American Airways System flight operations at Dinner Key

Dinner Key, Miami, Florida

From the state archives description: "Dinner Key, on Biscayne Bay at Miami, Fla., familiar to many world famous travelers, was once the site of the world's most busiest marine air base when Pan American World Airways' seaplane clippers began linking the globe. Purchased in 1930 by PAA as a port for its amphibians, Dinner Key became the springboard for clippers pioneering new aerial routes to Latin America and served as the training ground for trans-oceanic exploits. Dinner Key attracted many diners and sightseers, and during 1938, its peak year, more than 50,000 passengers flowed through the airport, making Miami the leading American city as a port of entry for international air travel."
