1930 - Air mail delivery being picked up from Pan American Airways System Sikorsky S-38 Flying Duck

Dinner Key, Miami, Florida

From the state archives description: "PAA pilot Edward G. Schultz arrived with one of the early loads of regularly scheduled airmail from Central America. Postmaster O. W. Pittman of Miami (extreme right) greets arrival."

There's nothing like some lovely ladies to spice up a historical event to be remembered on film and the internet!

The Sikorsky S-38 Flying Duck flew airmail to the Caribbean and Central America from Miami while pioneering many routes for Pan American. It flew at 110 mph, had 8 seats, a 10,480 lb. max gross takeoff weight and a 595 mile range. The fuselage was metal and the wings were constructed of metal and wood covered with fabric. It cost $50,000 in 1927.
