Weipa is a mining town of 3,500 km isolated on the west side of Cape York Peninsula facing onto the Gulf of Carpentaria in northern Australia.
To get there from the next largest town – Cairns – is an 820 km drive along a road that is unsealed for perhaps 300 of those kilometres, gets so rough and corrugated in sections that it is rated for 4WD vehicles only, and is impassable for months on end during the tropical wet season. (They are working on sealing all of it.) The main access is by air.
