Tropical heathland. To me, this was an entirely new and intriguing vegetation type, quite unlike the temperate and sub-tropical heathlands of eastern and south-eastern Australia. Tropical heathland occurs on skeletal ironstone and sandy soils that are extremely infertile and often poorly drained. Some the plants were familiar to me from other vegetation types, but others were not.
