Porcupine Gorge is carved for 30 km through a surface layer of basalt and deeper layers of sandstone. It cuts through the Einasleigh Uplands region of north Queensland, disgorging on to the Gulf (of Carpentaria) Plains near Hughenden. The climate is tropical semi-arid.
I can only guess that this gorge got its name from a sighting of an Echidna (Spiny Anteater), which ISN'T a porcupine.
