Wendover Area

I use the word "Wendover" to mean the combined area of West Wendover, Nevada and Wendover, Utah, two cities sitting side-by-side at the Nevada-Utah border on Interstate 80. The Nevada city has a larger population and an economy based on gambling casinos. The Utah city has about a third as many people and exists on salt production and racing fever. Together they provide a gateway to the Bonneville Salt Flats and speedway, the Silver Island Mountains, Floating Island, and Crater Island.

Wendover is the place where, in the early 20th century, the country's first transcontinental telephone line was completed, being the communications equivalent of the Golden Spike site at Promontory, Utah.

During World War 2, the Wendover area was a military training center. It was here, at Wendover Field, where many bomber crews---including that of the Enola Gay---were trained.
