Bingham Canyon is the site of a huge open pit copper mine. Its scale is mind-boggling. You can
drive all the way to the edge of the pit, where there is a visitors' center. Stand at the railing
and look into the biggest man-made hole you are likely to ever see in your life. Everything here
is big: the tires on the dump trucks are 11.6 feet (3.5m) in diameter.

Some maps and atlases incorrectly depict the location of the route to the mine as going through
the "town" of Copperton, west of South Jordan. As of 2004, Copperton was just a few buildings
that had seen better days. A locked gate blocked the road. It probably used to be the access
route, but no more. The visitors’ entrance is west of Riverton and Herriman, on Utah Highway 111,
just north of Butterfield Canyon Road. Photos were taken in June 2004.
