The Sun Tunnels, created by Nancy Holt, are a collection of four cast-concrete pipes acting as celestial artwork, arranged on the ground so as to align with the sun at the solstices. Holt died in New York City on February 8, 2014 at age 75.
It takes some effort to see the Sun Tunnels, as they are “out in the middle of nowhere” in northwestern Utah. They are a few miles east of the northern end of the Pilot Mountain Range and four miles (as the crow flies) southeast of the railroad grade crossing at Lucin.
The best way to get there is southward from Grouse Creek Junction (a signed road junction) on Utah SR 30. Avoid the Wendover-Leppy Pass-TL Bar Ranch route unless you like dust and washboard bouncing. Fill your gas tank in Wells or Wendover. The only other gas is in Montello, Nevada (hours of operation unknown).
Grouse Creek Junction is 8.7 miles northeast of the Nevada-Utah border (where Nevada SR 233 turns into Utah SR 30) and is the last place you will see any signs identifying roads. At the junction, set your trip odometer to zero and turn south onto the gravel road (Grouse Creek Road? Pilot Mountain Road?), heading for Lucin.
At mile 5.5, cross the railroad tracks at Lucin. Continue past the ghost town site of Lucin (bullet-ridden interpretive sign), down into and up out of a wash, and to a road junction at mile 6.3. Angle left here. At mile 7.7 turn left onto a gravel road pointing southeast. At mile 10 turn right (south). The tunnels will come into view up ahead. At mile 10.5, reach the turn-off for the Sun Tunnels.

Just in case you're still wondering what the "message" behind the drilled holes is
"The Sun Tunnels are set up to align with the summer and winter solstices, at these times the sun is centered exactly through the Sun Tunnels. Ten inch holes are cut into the concrete piping so that constellations can be seen through the holes at night. The holes align with four constellations-Perseus, Draco, Columbia and Capricorn."
