The arched harp "saung gauk" from Myanmar possibly links back to the ancient harps of Mesopotamia. Besides the "patala" xylophone it is the main instrument for the rich chamber music tradition. The different tunings of the harp result in musical modes, which represent the only "modal" use of scales in Asia with Vietnam and India.

This harp with 6 strings is called "Tünak" and used by the Karen people in Thailand and Burma. It is an interesting instrument as it appears to be a smaller model/version of the highly decorated "saung" harp of Burma. It also knows a variety of songs and pieces and is a basic instrument of the Karen musical life.

Here we can see how the chords are held in place on the inner side of the bamboo tube. Actually electric guitar strings get more common even in these instruments and those do not have to be fixed like this anymore. The instrument shown on the picture is an old one, maybe it wasn't even played for years. I will upload a sample on my pages soon.

The bamboo tube zither "Valiha" on this picture is coming from Madagascar where it is in the focus of a rich tradition, serving as an instrumental item of national identity. The strings can be plucked in interlocking methods by both hands, or it can be used as a chord instrument, "beating" the strings like a guitar. It is an interesting fact that we find tube zithers like this also in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Eine "Valiha" aus Madagaskar, die hier stellvertretend für die Röhrenzithern Asiens steht. Man kann die Saiten abwechselnd oder gleichzeitig mit beiden Händen zupfen, oder das Instrument wie eine Gitarre anschlagen. Die kleinen Bambusstücke sind beweglich und ermöglichen so ein Verstimmen der Saiten.

The Persian Santoor is a little different from the Indian one. It is a hammered dulcimer with three chords per tone and a triangle shaped wooden sound box. Playing this instrument in fast tempi requires high technical skills in the wrist.

Here we find the real ancestor of the idea which lead to the western piano: Three chords for each tone are spread over small moveable bridges which we already know from zithers of Asia. In combination with the wooden hammers beating the chord we have the first appearance of a hammered string.

Durch die Vielzahl an Saiten ist das Durchstimmen des Instruments ein zeitaufwendiger Prozeß, und je besser die Stimmwirbel halten (die übrigens mit einem Klavierschlüssel gedreht werden) um so teurer ist das Instrument. Die Pyramiden unter den Saiten sind frei verschiebbar, so lassen sich auch zwischen zwei Stücken Intonation und Stimmung des Instruments schnell anpassen.

The star shaped sound hole might reflect the length of the beaten tones. The Santoor sounds really "wet" with a lot of preverb and long lasting sounds, as we do not have the dampers on the chords like we find them for each key in a piano.

Even the tuning pegs are like in a piano: The arrangement of the three pegs for each tone on the tuning block is quite the same on the Santoor and the western piano. The Indian Santoor is a little more shaped like a triangle and knows 92 chords at all.

The hammered dulcimer "Khim" is a Southeast Asian follower of the Chinese "Yang Qin" and thus the Persian "santoor". It can be heard in ensembles throughout Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar and is actually a modern member of the "Mahori" ensembles.

Each instrument has its own name being carved on the back. This shows that a Qin is far more than a tool for making music. It is watched as a personality with an own character. My Qin's name is: "Nine clouds start circeling" (which means that I bring luck to the people when I play, you can see it left of the tuning pegs).

The "Guqin" music is not easy to play, it stands for discipline and concentration. One could say the same about the tuning: One has to pull the strings with power over the edge of the instrument, and pull as long you create the right pitch, then tie it around one of the standing feet. You really need arm power for this! The sound of the Qin is deep and soft but very low, so it never was intended to be a "show" case instrument.

The 16 strings are held up with pyramid shaped bridges, who stay movable under the chord and thus make it easy to tune the instrument fast just by moving these bridges. We find these bridges also on the Japanese Koto, The Korean Kayagum and the Chinese Guzheng. The Tranh is the smallest of these zithers.

The Vietnamese "Tranh" sounds very sharp and high. It is a basic part of many ensembles in Vietnam but also the most popular solo instrument and mainly played by women. This 16 string model was manufactured in three days in Hue, most other instruments nowadays come from factories and there are a lot of tourist models that only fullfill decoration purposes.

The syllabon "Gu" in the word "Guzheng" simply indicates its age, "Gu" stands for "old". This way, many instruments in China have to be called "Gu", like the "GuQin" zither. The Korean Kayagum is a follower of the Chinese Guzheng zither. It is part of the Korean cort music and knows a wide variation of playing techniques and styles. The most common performance today is the "sanjo" style with an additional drum player.

Die 12 Saiten werden durch Seilbindungen gestimmt, die fest geknotet werden. Diese Prozedur erinnert auch an die japanische Koto, bei der die Saiten aufgerollt werden. Es gibt mehrere pentatonische Skalen, die für westliche Ohren aufgrund der Halbtonschritte oft "traurig" klingen. Der KLang der Saiten ist dumpf aber warm und tief.

Like the Chinese "Guzheng" and the Vietnamese "Tranh" the Kayagum knows twelve pyramidal frets placed under the strings. By moving these bdriges, tuning can be adjusted easily and fast. Unlike the other zithers, the Kayagum gets plucked by the fingers alone, no plectrum is used.

Die Kayagum ist neben der Qin die einzige Zither, die heute noch mit den Fingern gespielt wird. Alle anderen Zithern werden mit künstlich verlängerten Fingernägeln oder Aufsätzen angeschlagen. Unter den Saiten finden sich wieder die verschiebbaren Holzpyramiden.

The Chape (or Jake) is a floor zither from Thailand and Cambodia, called "crocodile" zither because it lays on the floor and sometimes knows tuning heads which are manufactured like a crocodile. The three strings are tuned in a fifth/octave and struck by a plectrum bound to the index finger.

The gourd at the end of the chord is fixed to a swelling pole. It amplifies the swinging chord and also helps to develop a more solid voice. Actually most Dan Bao are amplified electrically as well, because this really low instrument otherwise wouldn't have a chance to compete in an ensemble.

The two stringed spike fiddle Rebab from Indonesia is commonly heard in the Gmalean ensemble and reminds us of other spike fiddles called "Rabab" or "Rebabe" in Arabian and other Asian countries. The Erhu is a Chinese two stringed violin which looks back on a deep solo tradition. Modern Erhu players are treated with high respect due to their traditional knowledge and high playing skills. Like with every stringed instrument, the tuning pegs are the most important part of the instrument in order to keep the tuning. So, if you run over a cheap instrument like this on Ebay, make sure the pegs hold the position well and end in the most common metallic screw on the end like shown on this picture.

The "Tyba" is really looking exactly the same like the Chinese "Pipa". An interesting fact though is the implementation in many ensembles and the lack of solo literature compared to the Pipa. Comparing both instruments one also realizes the missing of the virtuosity like we find in modern Pipa music.

These "frets" are build very high for a technical reason: The deeper you can bend the chord the more you can change the pitch of the played tone. This way the Tyba can slide the pitches far deeper than the Pipa, creating "bigger" modulations.

This seems to be a Sueng lute from Thailand - or at least an equivalent instrument. The Sueng appears in different sizes and shapes. Most commonly it holds 2-4 strings which are played with a horn plectrum. The Sueng gets used solo, accompanying lovesongs and is also heard in ensembles.

Unfortunately this lute suffers from non-fitting tuning pegs and thus doesn't keep the tuning, but it is richly ornamented with gold paint and little pieces of cloured mirror glas, so at least it is an eye catcher and will hopefully work/sound again soon.

This little model shows a smaller version of a lute called "Subü", played by the Lisu people in Northern Thailand, Burma and China. It is a part of an ensemble and sometimes also appears with four strings instead of three. Like all musical instruments of the Lisu, it is normally only played by men.

Like with the Chinese Sanxian and the Japanese Shamisen, the Thinh knows no frets and makes sliding very easy. It is commonly tuned in a fifth or fourth and the deeper chord is sometimes used as a drone. Several Persian and middle eastern lutes remind of lutes like this, for example the Turkish Saz.

As you can see on this picture the frets do not reach up as high as on the Tyba. The neck is seperated in two parts, the black frets are cut in triangles called "xiang" while the white frets are simply glued on the surface. Most of the cheap student models do face problems in tuning because of the wrong distance between the frets.

Die Bundstäbe sind nicht so hoch wie bei anderen Lauten, dafür jedoch zahlreicher. Der schwarze Hals hat tiefe Einkerbungen als Bünde ("xiang"), die den ursprünglichen Tonumfang des Instruments darstellen. If the holes for the four tuning pegs are to wide, the peg moves to easily and the tuning might change. A good Pipa keeps the tuning for a long time while a cheap model has to be retuned every time before plaing. The black colour of the "xiang" indicates a kind of "no viewing" zone - of course they get used, but not that often.

Auch die Stimmwirbel müssen gut sitzen, um die Stimmung auch über Wochen zu halten. Die schwarze Farbe der "xiang" zeigt auch eine Art Sichtsperre für den Spieler an, der das Instrument aufrecht im Sitzen vor dem Bauch hält, so daß eben diese Bünde ausserhalb seiner Sicht liegen.

The Sape is a lute/guitar from Borneo which also looks back on a long history. Being nearly forgotten, the Sape was rediscovered in the last decades and now is a very famous solo and ensemble instrument.

Die Sapeh aus Borneo ist lange Zeit in Vergessenheit geraten, heute jedoch durch intensive Studien der Völker wieder entdeckt und mithilfe elektronischer Verstärkung wieder sehr beliebt geworden. Es gibt Instrumente mit 2 bis 4 Saiten, wobei jedoch immer nur die höchste Saite die Melodie spielt.

Each Sape is carved or painted extensively, and this model is a rough model with the possibility for electric amplification, which becomes more and more usual for these instruments. There are several instruments ranging from three to five chords while the one with four chords seems to be the most common. The highest chord is played melodical, while the other chords often resound a drone.

Die Form der Sape erinnert oft an eine Art geschnitztes Paddel, und die Instrumente erscheinen oft sehr robust. Die reiche Verzierung ist hier aufgemalt, wird aber manchmal auch eingraviert, und auf dem Bild erkennt man den an eine E-Gitarre erinnernden Tonabnehmer.

The Persian "Ud" ("Ut"/"Oud") is one of the ancestors of all lutes worldwide. It appears with different sizes, tunings and 9 to 11 strings(always paired as a chorus) allover Northern Africa, Turkey and even with slight changes in Indonesia and Malaysia. It is commonly played with a plectrum made of a bird feather.

Die ursprünglich persische Kurzhalslaute "Oud" (Ut/Ud) ist der Vorläufer vieler europäischer, afrikanischer und asiatischer Lauten, die man sogar unter dem Namen "gambus" in Indonesien und Malaysia findet. Sie wird mit einem Plektrum aus einer Vogelfeder gespielt.

The "Ud" neck is fretless and the tuning pegs are as long as the ones on the Chinese "Pipa". The snapped off head is characteristic for this kind of lute family which was also spread over all of Europe during the medieval ages. The "Ud" knows different stories regarding its origin, most of them pointing back over 200 years. It still is one of the most important instruments in traditional Arab music.

Being fretless and with the doubled strings the Ud presents a very soft but charming voice. It is a bass lute and is very popular for its tone colour. Nowadays the sound of the Ud stands as an indicator for all Arabian music, but also for a rich methodology of ornamentations.
The classic term "Arabesque" refers to this kind of playing style with its diversity of variations and ornamentations. Playing the Ud demands high technical skills as well as a good knowledge of ancient and modern tunes, scales and regional playing habits. It is interesting that in the last decades, the European idea of a virtuos "star" cult was transferred to the actual Ud players, who sometimes get honored like Popstars.

This long necked lute is the Turkish "Saz" or "Baglama", a popular instrument for solo virtuos players as well as for ensemble performance. The six strings provide three paired tones, and the frets on the long neck even allow to play quarter tones, which is important for the typical Turkish scales. This instrument is amplified by attached pickups like in an electric guitar.

Diese elekronisch verstärkte Langhalslaute ist eine "Saz" oder "Baglama" aus der Türkei. Die verschiebbaren Bundklammern ermöglichen auch kleine Vierteltonschritte, die für die Skalen der türkischen Musik typisch sind. Die sechs Saiten zu jeweils drei Chören angeordnet, doch man spielt die Melodie meist nur auf dem höchsten Saitenpaar.
