This is the Vietnamese version ("Dan Tam") of the typical three stringed lute which we find all over Asia. The ancestor of these lutes might have been the Chinese "Sanxian", the most popular is the Japanese version called "Shamisen". All these instruments mainly get used in the chamber music.
