Miami, Miami Beach and Dade County certainly had a huge number and wide variety of hotels and motels due to our extensive tourism industry, especially during the winter season when all the snowbirds came down to enjoy our beautiful winter weather. Numerous hotels housed our military personnel during World War II because of the training centers that opened in Miami and Miami Beach. After the war our tourism boomed and we enjoyed winter tourist seasons beyond belief until the late 1960's/early 1970's with top name entertainers performing at the hotels on Miami Beach.

For those of you who are new to computing and/or surfing the internet, this is just one page of many pages of photos on this site. Re: guest My grandmother owned a home next to Hialeah race track and behind her house was an old three story hotel. As a child I vaguely remember the tall pine trees at the end of the street that lined the perimeter of the track. We were told to stay out of the old abandoned hotel but we snuck in anyway. ;) I have heard so many stories about the old hotel and how the family stayed there in the off race season and left during the race season. They owned six hotels in Hialeah. One is still there it's the "Pinetree Hotel".

When I was a kid I stayed at the Tropical Motel, off biscayne Blvd. it was walking distance to the State restaurant. Anyone know what street this was on? Or if any of it is still standing. Loved eating at the painted horse. And St Clair's cafeteria.

Looking for pictures of a hotel/motel called the OCEAN RANCH, where in 1953 spent a delightful summer as a child. It was right on Biscayne Bay, where I learned how to water ski. Went swimming in the pool, had a small restaurant on site.

Does any one know when the Belaire Hotel on 65th and Collins was torn down or the day they closed their doors? I last stayed there in June 1973 and met a girl named Laura from Michigan. Now stands a 19 story condo Belaire on The Ocean built in 2004. So sad, it was neat little hotel probably built in the 40's.

In regard to someone asking about a disappearance of people associated with the "Galen Beach Hotel", I am familiar with a similar hotel name, The Galen Hall Hotel, in Penna. This was near my home in Lebanon, Pa and we heard about this and the idea that the Bermuda Triangle had something to do with this. I am wondering if it is the same hotel we are speaking of or two hotels. Like to hear from someone on thbis.

My mother lived in Miami in the late 30's and 40's. Her dad owned the Wisconsin Hotel. I have pictures. The hotel was white and about two stories. I was wondering if anyone has any info on this hotel and or pics. Anything thing would be appreciated.

My Mother , 91 years young, moved to Miami with her 7 brothers and sisters in 1924. They arrived on the First auto train. She has pictures of the Ford Model Aor T' on flatbed railroad cars that took them from Jacksonville to Miami. Recently she gave me a dinner bell with "The Drum" engraved on it. She said her sister worked at the hotel on Miami Beach back in the 40's. I have not been able to find the hotel anywhere. Please help.

Since some of you lived in Miami during the 60's, do an of you recall the disappearance of Danny Burack and father Padraig Horgan on the night of December 22, 1967? Danny built the Galen Beach Hotel in '65, then sold it in late '66. Neither I nor the family of Fr. Horgan believe any of the "Bermuda Triangle" theories, so we're looking for anyone who might have heard rumors of an FBI investigation or other gossip. Also, it's possible the disappearance may be linked to the du Pont robbery (Oct. '67) and/or the Codomo robbery on Sunset Island #4 (Jan. '68). Off the wall, I know, but any memories would be greatly appreciated!

Drove 3 days from WI to get to the Castaways in June, 1972 for our honeymoon. Car had a breakdown everyday. Wish we could go back for anniversary. Still have the ashtray from our room. Live in TX now. Had a great time.

Please does anyone remember a mom and pop owned motel near the downtown Miami area late 1950s early 1960s period that was a square 2 or 3 story motel with a beautifully lush landscaped open air atrium in the center of it? The walkways to get to the rooms were along the inside of the atrium area. The pool was on the outside of the motel along the street with the parking lot bordering it. I'd love to find out the name of it. It was not near the ocean or any bay. I'm thinking it might have been on Biscayne Blvd but perhaps not. It was pre condo days so i'm sure its long gone now. At that time i remember the area around it being downtowny looking. I was only 6 but remember a wonderful family time.

We moved to Miami about 1952. My Dad was called Hap Happy and did a one man show, NY, DC, Jersey Shore. but The Magic City was home..He played @Fountain Bleu, Sherry Fontinac, and most clubs around. Remember afootball team practice at Berry College, a guy named Harry working at record shop at Hialeah shopping Center, now He's calls himself K.C., and he did get himself a Soul Band. moved to Hialeah about 1960, @ Lake Tahoe. (76-81 lived at Lake Tahoe, Ca/Nv) Was visiting Dad in Tavrenier in 92, noticed an absenteeism of fish inthat area then. Visited again in 98, went into Hialeah, around Miami Beach. HECK!!! They must of moved S. Beach, couldn't find it!! Along with all the neat little bars we use to sneak into, no parking garege there anymore eather, couldn't even have a sandwich at Lums. That's my trip down memory lane, We grew up in the best of times, at the neastest of places. Sorry to be so long winded, Hi Everybody, drop a line if ya' can, miss our city and my friends.

I am looking for a hotel that I visited in June 1955 with my grandparents. I believe it was called the Tuttle House and was located on the Miami River near a drawbridge. It was possibly owned and/or managed by the Wertheim family. It is probably no longer there but I'm trying to find the locaton. Thanks for any help.

Christina, the Holiday Inn South Beach was dismantled and completely rebuilt with additional floors and is now the "W Miami Beach" hotel. It is on Collins Avenue at 22nd Street.

My grandfather owned the Dutchman Bar in Hialeah when I was a kid. There is a Burger King there now. Does anybody have any old photos or memories of that bar?

Thanks for the memories. In the mid-50's we would board a Delta Royal Crown DC-7B from Cincinnati to Miami, and stay at the Algiers. The photo of Wolfie's is great, but I wish you had a Rony Plaza photo (small criticism). Remember the old saying-'when the Fountain blows, the Eden Rocks'?

My dad was the accountant at the Key Biscayne during the Nixon and Reboza era. We used to eat in the dining room for lunch and occasional dinners and it was a real treat. There was nothing from there to the lighthouse. There is a high rise condo on the property now.

We drove from NJ to FL each summer to stay at the Blue Mist. I remember everything about it....the bingo games in the lobby with the tote bags and orange marmalade as prizes (no one would ever call bingo when it was the prize was the marmalade!!).. the..poolside hot dog roasts...the pool..swimming at midnight..the coffee shop. The Marco Polo next door was the coolest place...seemed so luxurious. I remember how great it was..the Blue Mist was the best vacation ever!! Does anyone remember the restaurant the Black Angus right down the street?

Wow, Wow, Wow.... i can't beleive i found this site!! I come from England and my familiy and i came to Miami every summer from 1973-1983 (my dad worked for British Airways).... i stayed at the chateau, blue mist, sahara.. (smashed my head on the diving board at the Chateau aged 4 and need six stitches...couldn't swim again that holiday!!)... seeing these pictures along with the ones my mum has is so cool... is there any pictures of the restaurants on the oppsite side of the road to the motels.. or the shops... we havn't got many pictures of those (my favourite was the black angus staeak house because of the neon sign with the cowboy saying "no bum steer" (this was hilarious to a 6 yr old english kid!!!!!)

MY GRANDFATHER W MCLAUGLIN RAN THE BLUE SEAS MOTELS POOL AND COFFEE SHOP IN THE 60'S AND MY MOTHER PATTY AS A KID WAS A CHAMPION DIVER AND WOULD DO DIVING SHOWS AT THE POOLS UP AND DOWN THE MOTELS AND HOTELS ON SUNNY ISLES BEACH . WE ALSO WOULD FISH OFF OF NEWPORT PIER FOR DAYS AND SWIM IN THE INDOOR POOL AT THE CASTAWAYS HOTEL. TWO YEARS AGO I WENT BACK TO SUNNY ISLES ,WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED. what a shame!!!!!!!

What a fascinating site! I don't see any pics of the Gralynn Hotel here. My father, Harry Tuttle, was the Resident Manager there from 1943 until his death in 1967 at which time it was about to be torn down anyway. The Gralynn was located on corner of SE 2nd St. and 1st Ave.

I worked at most of the motels From the Newport to the Chateau, including the Monaco,Blue Mist,and Caravan. Man, I was the whore of Motel Row ! I was there the morning the owner of the Helicopter Service ran out to greet his pilot and forgot to duck. His head flew accross the street and hit a car. A real gross morning.

I took a walking tour of the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables today. They have them at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 on Sundays. Sponsored by the Dade Heritage Trust (note it's not the Miami-Dade Heritage Trust). Totally free. They start in the lobby near the bellhop desk. We got to see the ballrooms, the lobby, historic pictures in the halls and the suite on the 15th floor. I guess you get a tour of either the 15th or 13th, depending on which isn't booked. The real historic one is the 13th but the 15th isn't bad either. Very informative tour guide. Lots of info I already knew, but then again I grew up in the Gables and got to see the renovations in the 1980s. If you've been looking for an excuse to take a look around the Biltmore, this is your way to get in and not get arrested for trespass (just kidding). I would love to see a more in depth or behind the scenes tour. I've been in many of the hidden parts that still have a lot of history exposed. I could even explain some of the cool things I've found there. I bought the book in the gift store. $35. Lots of pictures including the hospital era. Good material for the coffee table. I hope to get more into it and report another time. By the way, am I missing a Biltmore page here? I don't see it in the 1920s or hotels. And I can't find a Coral Gables page. Don, if I'm posting this in the wrong place, please move it. I just couldn't find a better place. Ray

Motel Row, which started with the Newport Hotel and ended with the Marco Polo Hotel and had dozens and dozens of motels in between. ( Desert Inn, Castaways, Wakiki, Beachcomber, Blue Dolphin, and on and on. Great fun for us college kids in the 70s. Sure love to see some old postcards of those hotels / motels if anyone has any. How about the Monaco Motel. I dove off a diving board for the first time there on a vacation in the early 70's. I was about 8 years old. I think it is still part of a chain. I have super 8 movies from that place taken by my father.

Does anybody know the name of the motel that was across Dixie from UM? It is still there, on the canal, but has been renovated into offices, etc. UM owned it when I was a student from 83 - 85. I worked as a desk clerk, and the university would have been horrified to learn that porno films were being shot in the "penthouse." We had a REALLY creepy general manager, and she was paid "under the table" for the rentals. Guess we should have tipped the Herald, or something. One week it was XXX, the next Don Shula was staying there. It was actually a dump, and the restaurant was closed due to Hepatitis. Yikes!

Ref: Key Biscayne Hotel - we had our 20-year high school reunion there in 1985 and it was a nice hotel, recently remodeled as I recall. You're right, it disappeared in the 90's and I remember reading an article about it closing but I can't recall what was supposed to replace it. Does anyone have more specifics? Don
