2010 - current race/ethnic percentages for Miami-Dade and Broward County High Schools

The statistics on the pages in this gallery will probably be astounding to the folks who grew up in South Florida when their high schools were almost all white and they moved out to the north decades ago. These pages are compiled from an article titled "Race in the Schools" on page 19A of The Miami Herald on Sunday, May 9, 2010.

I would venture to say that this area has had one of the greatest examples of "white flight" in America since the early 1960's. The latest figures that I have seen are that there are an estimated two million residents who have moved out of Dade County over the years and that includes all races and ethnic groups but predominantly white non-Hispanics.

I can't imagine how crowded this area would be now if everyone had remained and not moved out. Knowing our state and local governments, we probably would have paved over the eastern Everglades by now in order to accommodate everyone.

After the 2000 census results came out, the Miami Herald did at least one story on the striking decline in white non-Hispanic numbers in South Florida. One 2001 article said the reasons they left range from "frustration with congested living to ethnic resentment." Apparently one of the largest white flights out of Dade County though happened after Hurricane Andrew.

I bet if the Cubans who fought in the Civil such as Julius Garesche or Federico Fernandez Cavada were alive today,they would be deeply ashamed of these people who come here and refuse to assimilate and employ cultural fascism.I am of Cuban-Ecuadorian ancestry,but I am Red,White and Blue as a boy can be.I do not speak much Spanish(Nor do I care to),engage in Spanglish,or speak with some subtle Spanish accent known aka a Miami accent and Yes I consider myself to be white not part of this nonsensical racial classification known as "Hispanic".At times I feel I am the only REAL American with a Spanish surname since Admiral David G. Farragut or Former Florida Governor Bob Martinez among these of what I like to refer to as Ameribanos(American born people of Cuban ancestry,who actually think they're Cuban)I pray that all such people wake up and realize they are Amricans nothing more nothing less and take a stand against the Cultural fascists who say things such as,"This place used to be full of Anglos until We took over"(I say,"Not on my watch ***hole!)

Fred, thank you for your comments, along with those from the guests and Bob. And Fred, I still go to Westland Mall in Hialeah, almost daily for the past decade, and I hear more English than Spanish in there especially from the younger customers. That wasn't the case 20 or 30 years ago. Don

As one of those Cubans who migrated to Miami over 40 years ago I have to partially disagree with the comment above. Older Cubans did not assimilate into the culture, just like older Italians or Germans never did, however, their kids and grand kids have and we speak more English at home than Spanish and feel as American as you do, the problem l lies upon the fact that Hispanic immigration from not only Cuba but most South and Central American countries has never stopped and you must realize that the education level from some of those countries unfortunately can not compare to that of Cubans forty or fifty years ago. I do however remember my Miami from the late 60's and early 70's and it was a paradise. Thank you Don for keeping this website for future generations.

I completely agree that the demise of Miami is due to the cultural issues we have been experiencing over the years. It saddens me.

This is probably one of the most interesting and overlooked topics in the history of Miami. Because the majority of the reverse migration was white non-hispanics, it was politically incorrect for any large news organization to properly elaborate on it. Without going into great detail, the bottom line is south Florida had an enormous cultural backlash because of the shear number of Hispanics that moved into the area from Cuba (over 30 years). And for the most part, their unwillingness to assimilate into the existing culture. It would be very interesting to see a legitimate study done on the south Floridians that left, what their reasons were, and what type of hardships they went through reestablishing themselves.

Yes Don, you're right about paving over the eastern Everglades. But you forgot to mention that they wouldn't have bothered to build any new roads or infrastructure to support the development. And then they would wonder why we have no drinking water. Pave over the watershed, and dump all the rainwater into storm drains and out to sea. What enlightened leadership we have here.
