We were all proud of the schools we attended in the Miami area and most of the schools still exist in the same buildings we used.

Virtually all of these images were moved from several other galleries to free up space. The exceptions are:

1. The Hialeah schools remain in the Hialeah gallery and the Miami Springs schools remain in the Miami Springs gallery.

2. The schools I attended - St. Mary's Parochial in Miami, Immaculate Conception School, Palm Springs Junior High and Hialeah High, all in Hialeah - are located separately at: https://pbase.com/donboyd/schools

Thank you for sharing those pictures. I graduated from Miami High in 1995. I can say that all of my family still calls Miami home. No we are not all materialistic and we still have good values. I can say that we aren't as prejudiced as some other people may sound on this forum. I came here to view part of the history of where I come from. Miami is a huge city with a lot of spice in its people and I am one of them. We love to go to the beach, drink a Colada and talk about the Marlins in Versailles. We are hospitable otherwise people wouldn't continue to come no matter how beautiful or expensive it could get. We love to see you visit with respect, love and kindness. Bye grumpy John. Sad people talking bad about Miami and my people. Sad that you are petty and come to tarnish the nice community here. This touched my heart and I felt I had to answer

Gin Great website. Live in IL now, but so fun to look back. I remember Morningside Elem school and Mr. Hurka's 1967-68 reading class too! Loved: Mr Hurka's piano in room, his making a reel-to-reel recording of our radio play Legend of Sleepy Hollow, his shiny red clay tile floors, his door(s) opening to the courtyard with the goldfish pond, his proximity to principal's office, all the open-air hallways, annual carnival in the courtyard, spelling bees in cafeteria, and lots more thanks to this website...even walking to and from school south on NE 5th Ave. Those were the days. Loved Morningside Park too. I think Chrissie Evert's uncle gave us tennis lessons at that park. And the Morningside Pool overlooking the Bay (Biscayne Bay) was fabulous, with its cabanas and snack bar downhill the grassy path.

Does anyone remember Gardner Elementary? It was a private school whose buildings used to be regular houses in a neighborhood. I went there in the early 1970's. I haven't been able to find any information about the school online.

Yeah it was the 1966 -1967 and I was in the sixth grade at Morningside elementary. A sweet, quiet girl strolled timidly into the the class of startled students.Mr. Hurka asked the class if Linda Vanessa Graham could sit behind someone. It looked like all the kids hands were glued to their desks. I meekly raised my hand just above the desk...she slowly and measuredly sat behind me. We stayed there the rest of the year. It seemed like I was her only friend. One day Linda said "Tommy, when we grow up, I want to paint you black and marry you". Linda you walked across the color line and into my life...that was a lifetime ago and I never saw you again ..I think we made history...when I see you again maybe we won't need any paint...A timid student walked into a startled homeroom class at Edison Jr. High. I sat measuredly behind Crutel Rivers...I must have appeared nervous, as I was the only anglo in the class...she comfortingly and affectionately referred to me as "Glass Jaw"...later that school year, riding in the car with my mother, on Biscayne boulevard, the crackly AM radio announced that The Right Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King had been assassinated...my Mother actually made me go to school the next day...she said "just pretend like nothing happened " ...I will be 60 soon and I willhave an African American grandchild...maybe things really are getting better...

It's cool to see how Miami was only 50-60 years ago. It looked like such a nice and safe place to live. It's a shame to see the awful crime-ridden, materialistic, snooty place it's become full of egocentric people from Spanish-speaking countries who refuse to learn English and rude folks from the Northeastern US. I was born here in 1978 and even in the 1980s there was still a hint of the old Southern Miami left that is all but gone now. I had the wonderful opportunity to meet the last of the original Miamians and they were as nice as can be, so hospitable and friendly. We really have lost our values. Admittedly my parents were born in a Spanish-speaking country but they as well as I became educated and assimilated and respected American culture. I don't like Miami anymore with all these plastic materialistic Beverly Hill wannabees. Perhaps if it had stayed as it was in these photos I would stay but alas I will soon go. I guess it's adapt or leave and I choose the latter. RIP Old Miami.

My name is Richard Dore, born 1940. Attende Hialeah High in 1954. Went to Miami Springs Jr in 1955; recruited to Miami Jackson in 1956 to play in the band. Would like to hear from any students from then as well as pictures. Also would like info on the Grand Opening of TV (ch 10?) station in 1956 where I danced with J.P. Morgan. Nary a photo of Miami Jackson High School nor Lindsey Hopkins Tech....Shame shame shame...I am Marvin L Mobley, Born in Miami, Jan 30 1933. A month and a few days till I'll be 78....I left Miami to Join the Air Force in 1951......Most comments I read start at that time.....I have seen many things in Miami, these folks will never see...At age 6 walked from 13th ave and 40th street to the 13th street Causeway, with my older brother,some times all the way over to the beach..........Spent summers and Christmas Vacation on Cape Fla, with Paul Pent, wife Rosa, and daughter Joan. The Pent's & Smiths were the only folks living on Key Biscayne until the Causeway was finished and Crandon Park opened.... Mr Smith ran a bulldozer and cleared most of the underbrush to create the Park........Spent the whole year there in 1948. Joan, Richard Smith and his sister and I rode a bus from Crandon Park to Coconut Grove elementary and Jr. High every day...Joan and I had to ride a boat from the Cape end up to Crandon Park and back in the afternoon.............Wow what great living then.......fishing before school and after, plus swimming too......or just sitting on the 12ft wide porch on the Old James Deering estate on the south end close to the light house.........Paul Pent's Father was born on the island, his dad being the light house keeper at that time....He also died in his bedroom, of the Deering estate Summer Home, living with Paul and family........He was over 85 years old........

wow, these schools are diferent now, theres barely anymore white race (without any offence) and the people now days dress different and act different. Its amazing how things change in just a few years.

Visited my old stomping grounds last week, including a walking tour around Shenandoah Park. FYI, they must have recently changed the school name to Shenandoah Middle School (supplanting the Jr. High designation; I assume this was done citywide)- and the old library on the next block is now closed. Well, that's progress. I found this site inadvertently, but will be back when I have time.

I attended S Miami Elem, Sunset Elem, Carver (1st year of busing, 1970 7th grade), Ponce (8th & 1/2 of 9th), Palmetto Jr, Palmetto Sr (76) wow just 6 thought it was more but the best was Cocoplum kindergarten (on Sunset in the S Miami Women's Club Bldg, still there I believe) there were 2 classes, Redbirds and Bluebirds. There was (is?) actually a blown up portrait of my year's class in S Miami hospital (well it was there 17 years ago when my niece was born)

I attended 11 schools in 12 years, almost always moving mid-year. Eight of those schools were in Dade Co, 1 in Duval County (part of 2nd grade), and 1 in Alachua County (4th grade). The Dade County schools were Riviera Day School '65-'66, Palmetto Elementary '68, Howard Drive Elementary '69, Sylvania Heights '71-'72, West Miami Jr. High '73, Academy of the Assumption (Catholic girls school, Brickell Rd.) '74, Citrus Grove Jr. High '74, Started at Coral Park, but moved to Miami Beach Sr. High '75-'78.
