Founded by Jose Altimira on July 4, 1823 (the only Mission founded after Mexico's Independence from Spain.)

21st and last Mission of California.

On this location in July 14, 1846 the Bear Flag was raised, declaring California’s independence from Mexico. This is one of only two Missions not under administration of the Catholic Church. This Mission is a part of the Sonoma State Historic Park. Located across a central square of Sonoma, right amid numerous restaurants and wineries. The church is empty. Visitors can see a rather simple Altar, and a tile floor of a simplest kind. The main point of interest is the Museum and the artifacts from the age of change, when Alta California changed hands from Spain to Mexico, than to an independent Republic, and later becoming a State of the USA. (Another Museum close by is the House of Generalissimo Vallejo, who presided over secularization of the Missions and later even became first Governor of the California Republic.)
