Mission Nuestra Señora de la Soledad
(Seen in Dec.2024) Founded by Fermín Lasuén de Arasqueta on October 9, 1791. 13th Mission of California. Known commonly as the "Mission Soledad". Located in the Wine Country south of Salinas, in a rural area. The Address is: 36641 Fort Romie Road Soledad, CA 93960. Take exit 301 from the Highway 101, the Arroyo Seco Road. Take a right on Fort Romie Road and follow the road for about one more mile to find the Mission. The road toward the Mission was at parts almost a "country road". I felt reminded of the popular song by John Denver "Country road, take me home to the place I belong...". Upon arrival I spotted one simple white painted building with a red tile roof. Nothing else around, but fields.
Probably the smallest of the Missions, and one of the most remote, and yet it has its own
Official Web-site.
Around the Mission Church and the attached Museum building is only farm land. No any other structure was in sight. However a dedicated team keeps the Mission alive, and even maintains a small but nice museum with its own gift shop. I encountered barely any other visitor.
