Mission San Juan Capistrano ---under construction---
(Seen in Feb 2009) Founded by Fermin Lasuén on October 30, 1775. Abandoned due to unrest among the indigenous population, and re-founded by Junipero Serra on All Saint’s Day, November 1, 1776.
This is clearly one of the most impressive Missions. The chapel built in 1782 is the oldest building in California still in use. The architecture and the Museum's exhibition stand out. Actually, so does the historic part of San Juan Capistrano itself. Definitely one of the best destinations to see in all of California.
The monument depicting Father Junipero Serra as a towering giant in front of a tiny Native American spurred ongoing controversy.
