Mission La Purísima Concepción
(Seen in Juni 2026)
Founded by Fermín de Lasuén on Dec. 8, 1787
(the feast day of the immaculate conception of Mary the Most Pure). The name of the town is not really known to most people,
but Lompoc has been inhabited for thousands of years by the Chumash people,
who called the area lumpo'o̥ in the local Purisimeño language.
The Spanish called the area Lompoco after Fermín de Lasuén had established the Misión.
And here we are back to our topic: After secularization Mission La Purísima was abandoned, fell into disrepair and partly collapsed. It was restored during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). This Mission is administered by the State Parks. It is one of only two Missions not controlled by the Catholic Church. For information about visiting consult Mission Purísima official web site. Visiting the Mission is surely a strange experience. Walk from the parking across a tree line, only than the Mission appear in the distance. Long walk leads alongside corrals with Long Horn Buffalo(!), across a dry, desolate parcel to the Church. Entry to the haunting, empty Church is through its 3rd door. The curator keeps the Church and other buildings in a state resembling the pioneer and conquest time, more authentic than the manicured Mission replicas elsewhere. That makes a visit to this Mission State Park special and highly recommended. Behind the church are 2-3 more Adobe buildings. They host an extensive Museum and even a large Chapel close to the former living quarters. At the rear of the Mission Grounds are gardens with walkways and several fountains as a part of the water management system. Back at the parking area is a quite exquisite Visitors Center, which has a great exhibit and provides detail information about the history of the Mission since its founding to the present time. |
