Mission San José
(Seen in Mar. 2026, Apr. 2026) Founded by Fermin Lasuén on June 11, 1797. The official web page of the Mission San Jose informs about services and visiting. The Mission is located in Fremont, not in the city of San Jose. The Address is: 43300 Mission Blvd., Fremont, CA 94539 The original Adobe Church was dedicated on April 22, 1809, replacing earlier wooden structures. This Adobe Church collapsed on 21. October 1868 in earthquake of a magnitude 6.7. The church and the mission buildings were destroyed completely, except for one wing of the "Convento", which serves now as a Museum and hosts a Chapel. Fascinating fact is that the Gothic Church, which was build on the ruins of the 1809 Adobe Church, was moved to the city of San Mateo (!) to free the original lot on which the Adobe Church once stood. Once archeological excavations on that lot concluded, a replica of the 1809 Church was erected. The meticulous reconstruction took 3 years: 1982 to 1985. Adjacent to the church is an old cemetery, and next to it is St. Joseph Church, a center of a local parish. The Museum in the old Convento is definitely worth visiting. The creators of the exhibits took a great pride in selecting the artifacts and arranging the display. And yet, compared to the Missions Carmel, San Juan Capistrano or to Santa Clara, this Mission will be often overlooked. It took even me 25 years to finally see this amazing mission!!
