The oldest Mission was created in Baja California 1683 by Jesuits (San Bruno
in Loreto/Laredo). Most missions in the Baja were created by the Jesuits, some
by Dominicans. The Missions in the Alta California (today the State of California)
were founded by Franciscans. However the Mission Santa Clara is now a part
of the Catholic University of Santa Clara, and thus in the hands of Jesuits.

The Old Missions in the Baja are mostly in ruins or abandoned and in disrepair.
