Timpie: Abandoned Truck Stop

At I-80 Exit 77 (Timpie, Utah), sits an abandoned truck stop. I wandered through it imagining I
could see semi-trailers pulling in and getting gassed up. I heard diesel engines roaring, doors
slamming, gas pumps whirring, and people speaking. But only for a moment---then it was silent.
According to a state policeman I talked to, the place had closed down about fifteen years earlier.
When I took these pictures in 2004, the place was used as a paint ball arena. In 2007 everything was gone.

This was a stop in my road trip of 2004.

We used to stop here for snacks on the way to skull valley for scout camps in the early '80's. Wish it was still a thriving enterprise as I have worked in Dugway and Rowley and would have enjoyed stopping there and taking my now grown kids there.

My Mother and Dad run this cafe in 1957, Evern and Clara Walk, it was called Timpie Cafe. I'm trying to find pictures around that time, there was a two car garage on the west side.

I have been looking for images of this truck stop while it was in operation and have found only a few unclear aerial photos from 1978 thru the mid 80's. Would like more history on it. The finals scenes of the 1993 movie Teenage Bonnie and Klepto Clyde were shot here in 1992 from what I can tell.

The Teddy Bear's truck stop was open while I lived in Grantsville. I worked there during the summers while I was in college from 1984 - 1986. It was run and operated by the Baird family.

The abandoned truck stop used to be called Teddy Bears Truck Stop. The skeleton of a building next to the gas station was the small restaurant that formed the nucleus of the operation. It did a good business when Dugway Proving Grounds was doing more weapons testing back in the 1950s and 1960s. It was still open in 1973 when I moved to Utah but closed in about 1975, about the time the work at the Proving Grounds was slowing down.
