Pan American Field - 36th Street Airport - MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (MIA) - Historical Photos Gallery

Pan American World Airways built Pan American Field and it opened on September 15, 1928. It was a very small fraction (1/10th) in size to the current Miami International Airport. Eastern Air Lines and National Air Lines moved from Miami Municipal Airport in north Hialeah to Pan American Field in the 1930's and the airfield became known as the 36th Street Airport. MIA was formed after World War II by combining the former Pan American Field, and airfield that expanded Pan American Field for the 36th Street Airport, with property to the east and west and the former Army Air Corps MIAD airfield on the south side of the Seaboard Air Line railroad tracks that ran east-west to the south of existing runway 8R-26L. The photo at https://pbase.com/image/97866432 is the best visual depiction of how Miami International Airport evolved that I have seen anywhere.

If World War II had not broken out, Miami's International Airport would have been located at the site of Master's Field which was located between NW 27th Avenue and west to the Seaboard Air Line railroad tracks and from NW 106th Street north to approximately NW 123rd Street. But the U. S. Navy took control of Master's Field for military purposes at the start of World War II and the federal government retained the property until the mid-1950's, leaving Dade County with only the 36th Street Airport and surrounding properties as an option for a large international airport.

STRANGE BUT TRUE - THIS SITE IS BANNED BY MDAD AT MIA: For unknown reasons the Information Systems Division at the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, which owns and operates Miami International Airport, has banned my website for all airport-owned computers and apparently the Aviation Director and the county Mayor can not overrule the manager of the division despite the wealth of historical information on the site. Fortunately the information systems manager can not prohibit county employees from viewing my site on their mobile devices and personal computers.
