1960 or 1961 - the new 20th Street Terminal at Miami International Airport

Miami International Airport view map

Thank you to Alvin Lederer for contributing this image from a postcard. The airport hotel, managed by Sky Host Hotels, has been added since the terminal's opening in 1959 and Eastern Air Lines has moved to Concourse 5 (now D) (right side) from the 36th Street Terminal. A couple of National Air Lines Lockheed Electras are visible on the Concourse 3 (now F) ramp on the left side.

A closeup view of this image shows the "Wilcox Field" letters mounted on top of the overhang in two locations left and right of the center above the upper drive. There are two sets of "National Air Lines" letters to the left of center lower that the Wilcox Field signage and "Pan American" to the right of the middle.

The reverse of this postcard states at the top left corner:
"Miami International Airport Hotel
Directly atop the Miami Airport Terminal. 270 completely soundproof guest rooms, each with radio and TV. 100% Air Conditioned. Roof top Restaurant and Lounge. The most convenient stopover point in Miami between flights or plane connections.
P. O. Box 2094, Miami, Fla. 33159 * Tel: 633-9611 * TWX 305 696-4499"

The reverse of this postcard states at the bottom left corner:
"Sky Host Hotels - Houston Airport Inn, International Hotel at Los Angeles Airport, Birmingham Airport Motel, Miami International Airport Hotel."

Representative J. Mark Wilcox. He was Attorney General for the Dade County Port Authority/Greater Miami Traffic Association from 1945 until his death in 1956.

Who was Wilcox? I've always wonder who he was.

"Wilcox Field" is the answer to one of my favorite Miami Trivia questions.
