GALLERY :: Manzanar Relocation Camp - A Place to Remember:: Manzanar, California, October 2006

I had been wanting to visit Manzanar Historical Site near Lone Pine, California for some time. On this recent visit to the Eastern Sierras I was able to spend part of a morning there. I found the visit moving. I am impressed that our nation can look at both the good and bad aspects of our history. Manzanar was one of the camps created during World War II to house the Japanese. It was created in fear and unjustice. The site was completely demolished after the war because the land was leased from the Los Angeles Water District (which is a whole other story). A visit to the Historical Monument reveals a vast emptiness. There are, though, remnants of the war camp. There is the old gym which has been made into a visitors center and you can take a driving tour through the camp. Stopping along the drive allows you to see hidden elements of the life of the camp - such as garden stones and dry waterways. There is a cemetery at the back of the site - most of the pictures in this gallery are from the cemetery. You can find out more about Manzanar here: http://www.nps.gov/manz/
