Cormorant Platforms

These platforms have been constructed a couple of hundred metres offshore at Walvis Bay and are home to many thousands of cormorants and a few hundred pelicans. The birds deposit a thick layer of guano droppings which is harvested at reglar intervals as a source of high concentration nitrate fertiliser.
