(anhinga rufa)
The African Darter is a cormorant-like bird which can be commonly found around lakes and along slow moving rivers. When swimming only its long snake like neck and head are visible. It spears its prey with its dagger like bill. Like cormorants they often perch with their wings outstretched. This bird had a favourite perch on the river in front of Shakawe Lodge, Botswana.
