(ceryle rudis)
A large black and white kingfisher which is widespread. It can be found near any open fresh water and by the coast. For a kingfisher it has an unusual hunting style in which it hovers over the water rather than plunging from a perch and so it is sometimes seen long distances from the shore over large lakes. The male has a double black breast band whilst females and juveniles have a single broken band. Photographs taken at the Kavango River near Shamvura Lodge and at Shakawe Lodge.
