Traveling Route 66 - May, 2005

During the 1960's two vagabonds, Buzz and Todd, played by Martin Milner and George Maharis traveled around the old Route 66,The Mother Road, in a 1962 Corvette. Of course, it was only on TV but it captured our imagination and I thought it would be cool to retrace the old highway, which also is a nostalgic icon of traveling to the west.

As we travel through the southwest, the demise of the Mother Road becomes increasingly evident. Many items described as alive in the guide book we are using are not.
After a break to visit friends and a round of golf in Santa Fe, we are back in the saddle. Photo Ops seem to be getting rarer.

Today we traveled into Arizona, stopping in Flagstaff for the day.

Yesterday we stayed in Williams, Az. and took the Grand Canyon Railway train to the Canyon. We hiked a short distance on the trail we will be going down to get to the river in August. I have a lot of work to do to get in shape.
Today, we completed our trip across Arizona and entered California. We spent almost all day on the old road and saw some of the most preserved stretches of the entire trip.
The highlight of the afternoon was crossing into California and driving through the Mohave Desert. HOT, HOT, HOT!

As I write this we are about to check out of our hotel in San Diego to deliver the Corvette to the transporter for its well deserved ride home. Pat and I will be flying home later today.
The official end of the trip occurred at 2:30 on 5/24 at the intersection of Santa Monica Blvd. and Ocean Ave.
We spent a night near the pier and then drove to San Diego for a round of golf yesterday with a friend of Pat's brother-in-law.
Gallery updated as of 5/25.
