A rare event occurred this year in Minnesota. Great Grey Owls, who normally winter in northern Canada came down to northern Minnesota near the town of McGregor. As the story goes, these owls eat voles over the winter and periodically the population of voles shrinks to life threatening levels causing the owls to migrate in what is known as an "irruption". We were visiting Minnesota from our Florida home towards the tail end of this phenomenon. While we didn't experience the large numbers and didn't have time to try to get shots of the birds hunting in the Minnesota fields, we did see a number of owls perched along the local county roads.
