From Esperance we drove inland (north) into country that is both drier in nature and rather droughted this year. This is a remote national park in the Great Western Woodlands of Western Australia. The centrepieces are several huge granite outcrops, Peak Charles and Peak Eleanora. These are surrounded by a vast plain of mallee, heath and salt pans. Semi-arid at the best of times, we visited under adverse conditions: grey, blustery weather and drought. Notwithstanding, a few hardy shrubs were flowering well, and in one place on the rock outcrop the meagre season's rain had concentrated in a gully, yielding a delightful little wildflower garden.
