Train journeys in Sri Lanka are a special experience in themselves regardless of the destination. The beauty of the scenery, in which small rural stations coloured pink or yellow are set against vivid green tropical foliage and framed by bright red flowers, the joy of hanging out the doors or sitting on the steps as the train roars around a bend, the anticipation of another vendor's appearance, all compensate for the occasional tedium of an enforced wait at a siding. Only the stuffiness when the fans do not work during a long stop or having to stand during a long journey mar the experience.
