After visiting Trincomalee I caught an overnight train to Colombo, where I spent 24 hours in transit, then went south by train and bus to Galle. I stayed in Galle's Fort area, which is a well-preserved historic enclave gradually being redeveloped with small hotels, restaurants and shops. I also visited the new town of Galle and went to Matara, further along the coast, as a day trip.
I stayed at Fort Inn Guest House in Pedlar Street near upmarket boutique hotels, where I sometimes ate.
After three days in Galle I drove via the newly opened expressway north to Colombo and the airport and, after spending my last night at Airport Garden Hotel (part of the Taj group), only 5km from the airport, I flew home via Kuala Lumpur.
