Photos of a visit to Matara from Galle in January 2012.
Matara (pronounced Maatra), a bustling market town on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, makes a good day trip from Galle, more for the beauty of the scenery en route than for the attractions of the town itself, although it does have its charms. Train timings from Galle did not work well for me so I caught the bus there and returned by train.
The tropical scenery was reminiscent of Kerala and absolutely delightful. My carriage had few passengers so not only did I have a window seat but also I was able to move around and take photos from both sides and from the door at the end, looking back down the tracks.
