4 Kandy

Photos of a few days in Kandy at Christmas, 2011.
First I stayed at Hotel Topaz on the top of a hill, then spent another two days at Queen's Hotel, next to the lake and the Temple of the Tooth. Queen's is a glorious relic of the mid-19th century and is also remarkable for having a convenient, city-centre location, unlike most hotels in Kandy.
I visited Kandy Muslim Hotel, a long-established cafe known for its kottu roti; the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, where I was refused admission to the inner sanctum because of wearing a brightly shirt - the same colour as a Buddhist monk's robe; shrines next to the temple; and the British Garrison Cemetery. I also visited Kandy Municipal Market, where I was struck by the bright colours and high quality of the fruit stalls, and saw a performance of traditional dance at the Kandyan Art Association and Cultural Centre.
