Welcome to the Usambara Mountains. We did some hiking with a guide in this densely populated agricultural region of northeastern Tanzania.
This lady kindly posed for a photo so that we could show people the typical way women carry packages. We sometimes struggled up uneven narrow paths while women carrying far more than us negotiated the same routes with incredible grace and balance.

Some areas have terraced fields in order to minimize erosion and retain moisture for the crops. Our guide has been involved in projects to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach.
