We stayed for three days at a traditional inn located at an "onsen" (hot spring).

The rooms have all of the classic Japanese features. We were served dinner on the low table that was then moved to allow futons to be placed on the tatami mats.
15-OCT-2006
There was a stone hot spring bath through a sliding door.

Guests leave their shoes at the door and wear sandals on the grounds of the inn. We are also wearing cotton kimonos ("yukatas").
16-OCT-2006
Special socks are provided that make it easier to wear the sandals.

You must clean yourself thoroughly before getting in the bath. This includes all soap suds. Traditionaly, a bucket is used to rinse off.
The inn has two large outdoor areas for general use, one for women only and one for mixed use, plus three "family baths", which are used privately.
Don't worry -- this is as explicit as it gets!

This was our favourite bath. It sits in a beautiful location with a view of a waterfall.

The meals were as beautiful to look at as they were delicious to eat.
