Peregrine Falcons have been nesting continuously on the Radisson Hotel in downtown Winnipeg since 1989. This year, the first of our peregrines was seen on the Radisson Hotel on March 17th and she has been identified by her band number as Princess, our resident female. A male turned up on the 25th and while we were unable to definitively identify the bird by his band, from his plumage, he was not our resident male, Trey. Princess gave this new male the brush off for a week, until March 31st when Trey returned and the new male was escorted out of the territory. On April 19, the first egg was laid on the Hotel's east-side nestledge. Egg number two was laid on the 21st and number three on the 23rd. An severe winter storm with snow and freezing rain on April 24th coincided with the beginning of incubation so it took until April 28th before we could get our first look at this year's fourth egg. The eggs hatched June 1st and were developing well until June 9th when Winnipeg was hit by a long, heavy rainstorm and the chicks died of exposure to rain despite a valiant rescue attempt by the High-Angle Rescue Team of the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service. Because Trey and Princess remained onsite after the loss of their nest, we attempted to encourage them to "adopt" two captive-bred chicks but without success. Princess and Trey remained at the Radisson through the summer and migrated in late September. In 2006, the Project partnered with CBC Manitoba and Shaw to bring you an intimate look at the lives of our famous downtown peregrine pair.The images in these galleries are webcam screen captures and photos taken and donated to the Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project (Manitoba) by fans of the peregrines to be displayed here.
