episode four

We were strangers
Starting out on a journey
Never dreaming
What we'd have to go through
Now here we are
And I'm suddenly standing
At the beginning with you

Life is a road
And I want to keep going
Love is a river
I wanna keep flowing
Life is a road
Now and forever
Wonderful journey

I'll be there
When the world stops turning
I'll be there
When the storm is through
In the end I wanna be standing
At the beginning with you.....

I love this gallery. And not just because I recently visited my daughter in New York, where I failed to make a single interesting photo on the NYC subway system. Your work, your story telling, is outstanding.

Hi Ai Li, I keep coming back to this gallery, and each time I am astounded by how you manage to say so much by so little. The compositions seem to be so effortless until one realises how there are so many layers to each image, and how individually and collectively, these have been so thoughtfully and artistically created. It is truly inspiring work. I hope to see your latest project on pbase not too far into the future!

Ai Li, my apologies for taking so long to view this gallery. I've begun by viewing it as a slideshow (I'll get to individual images as soon as I can). Knowing the depth of your compassion for people allows us to see the world from your viewpoint. A few commentors have mentioned a sense of intimacy in these images, and I agree. As a whole, the gallery is sensitive and yet has a certain tongue in cheek quality that is a reflection of your artistic talent and your unique way of looking at the world around you. Congratulations on producing a cohesive narrative of daily life. Whether your subjects are interacting directly with us, or looking at something out of the frame, we want to explore further and follow their gaze, to be a part of the story. Jenene

I totally agree with the words of Phil. Presentation and result of this black and white gallery is absolutely wonderful to me. Strong in human values and so perfectly descriptive. I felt that I was among the people you photographed, inside the atmosphere of Paris. Furthermore whole project was like an exhibition (photos hanged on the wall), with an artistic touch in every piece of it and this is the most I like. You always manage to give us works of exceptional quality. Bravo Ai Li.

What an amazing gallery, it has been a real pleasure to spend some time here on a lazy Sunday. You have such a keen eye for the unusual shot and your reflection of this world is our joy! It seems sometimes as if the world changes when you focus. Thank you so much for taking the time to create this masterpiece! V

I have just seen the finished gallery, and treasure your photographs for both their content and the way you have organized them in the frame. You continue to mature as an artist before our eyes by consistently taking the most ordinary subjects and making them extraordinary, often just by where you choose to stand and how you choose to frame or crop the image. Your photography is so rich in intimacy and human values, reflecting the deep respect and love you manage to bring to your subject matter. You move well beyond using graphic effects for their own sake, and instead give us visual substance that makes us think, feel, and imagine, giving us juxtapositions and relationships within the frame that often abstracts the subjects, creating thought provoking incongruity as a result. You are a gifted story teller, an expressive artist, and a yes, a photojournalist here -- and all at once, Ai Li. Your new work is simply magical. Thank you for sharing it with us.

I really like your gallery. I tried to figure out what it is and I think there is a sense of intimacy even though most of the pictures show what are most likely strangers.

Ai Li, this gallery shows your humanistic vision of life and stunning artistic sensibilities. Wonderfully quirky, sometimes irreverent (in the best sense), and always as unique as your own fingerprint, each image allows us to see the world through your eyes, eyes as uncompromising as they are compassionate. Thank you SO MUCH for again sharing your images with us. There is only one Ai Li and when you are not with us, we miss you.

Doug Kessler 29-Sep-2007 19:26
I am so impressed by this great gallery. However, upon reflection, I cannot be surprised because you have always displayed a brilliant eye for composition. This new work extends your reach into a level that few seem to reach. You are astonishingly gifted. Perfect presentation as well. Just the best thing I've seen in quite a while. Biggest vote possible! Congratulations and welcome home, Ai Li.
