Jodhpur

On day 4, the Palace on Wheels goes to Jodhpur, called the Blue City because of the characteristic colour of many buildings. First we saw Jaswant Thada, built in 1899 in white marble as a memorial to a maharaja. Then on to Meherangarh, a huge and spectacular fort that dominates the city. It contains some small palaces. For lunch we went to Umaid Bhavan, the largest and newest palace in India, which was built between 1929 and 1944 in pink marble and sandstone. Today it's a 5-star hotel, although the maharajah still lives there.
