Order PICIFORMES

Woodpeckers
They are mainly stiff-tailed, long-necked birds with strong chisel-shaped bills that they use to hammer or prise open the substrate (wood, bark, rotten material, ant and termite nest) to find food or make nest sites. Most have powerful, ringing cries and some also drum. A woodpecker flies by noisily flapping its wings for a few strokes and then gliding with them closed; this causes it to dip deeply and results in a heavy undulating flight; one bird always follows another from tree to tree, uttering laud, discordant call notes. (Smythies, The Birds of Borneo, 1999)

Piculets
The piculets are distinguished from the true woodpeckers by their very small size and short, soft tail feathers. They do not drum, and pick much of their food from the substrate surface. Out of 31 species, 27 are South American, one African and three Asian, and two of the Asian Species are found in Borneo. (Smythies, The Birds of Borneo, 1999)
