Order PASSERIFORMES
Shrikes
Shrikes are medium-sized, trimly-built birds of predatory habits and fierce aspect, with a hooked and hawk-like bill and a long graduated tail; most species have a broad black band through the eyes and perch conspicuously in open country slowly swaying their tails (no other birds wave their tails about like the shrikes); at intervals they fly down to seize a morsel off the ground, or fly off to another perch with characteristic harsh swearing note. (Smythies, The Birds of Borneo, 1999)
Wood-swallows
The swallow-shrikes or woodswallows are found in South-East Asia and Australasia, and are represented by one species in our area. They resemble the shrikes in having a powerful conical bill which is gently curved though neither hooked nor notched. Members of the family possess powder-down feathers, and have brush-tipped tongues. (Smythies, The Birds of Borneo, 1999)
