Order STRIGIFORMES

Owls
Owls ranges in size from the small scops owls to the large eagle-owls. All of them are primarily arboreal and nocturnal, but an observer will sometimes chance upon an owl during the daytime, usually sitting silently, suffering from as much resignation as it can the mobbing of small birds that often reveals its presence. One of the disconcerting features of owls is their ability to rotate their heads, always to face the intruder, with their big round eyes set in a flat facial disk. (Derek Holmes and Stephen Nash, The Birds of Sumatra and Kalimantan, 1990)

Order Caprimulgiformes

Nightjars
Nightjars are nocturnal aerial feeders, with long pointed wings, rather long tails, and acrobatic, hawk-like flight. The rich, heavily mottled brown plumage is a good camouflage fro birds resting on the ground or along branches, usually lengthwise during the day. (Derek Holmes and Stephen Nash, The Birds of Sumatra and Kalimantan, 1990)
