Meteora

Meteora is a breathtaking rock formation in central Greece famous for its historic Eastern Orthodox monasteries perched atop towering sandstone pillars. Over 50 vertical bluffs cover an area over 3.5 square kilometers (865 acres) with heights from 100 to 300 meters (330 to 990 ft). Built high in the air for safety centuries ago, six of these remarkable cliffside sanctuaries remain active today. This stunning destination is a UNESCO World Heritage site that combines dramatic natural scenery with religious history.

The greek word meteora means "suspended in the air". The name "Meteora" probably comes from Saint Athanasios the Meteorite, the founder of the Monastery of Meteoron. He named "Meteoron" the broad rock that he first climed in 1344 A.D.
