The interior walls of the Monastery of Saint Nicholas Anapausas in Meteora showcase exceptional post-Byzantine iconography painted in 1527 by the renowned Cretan master Theophanes the Cretan (Theofanis Strelzas). Characteristic of the Cretan School, the artwork features elongated, expressive figures, rich theological depth, and brilliant color palettes that blend traditional Byzantine symbolism with subtle early-Renaissance humanism. These meticulously preserved frescoes transform the narrow monastic corridors and doorways into sacred storytelling spaces, depicting hallowed saints, biblical narratives, and celestial guardians.
