The Monastery of Varlaam was first settled by the hermit Varlaam around 1350 before being re-established in 1517 by two wealthy monks who hauled materials to the summit using rope baskets and ladders. Architecturally, it follows the classic Athonite cross-in-square style, featuring cloisonné masonry, red brick accents, and wooden balconies surrounding an open stone courtyard.
