Bandelier National Monument is located at North-central New Mexico, about 30 miles from Santa Fe. Ancestral Pueblo Indians (or Anasazi people) began settled around this area in 1200 A.D and built their houses in the caves of the canyon walls. By late 1500s, for some unknown reasons to historians, they abondoned this area. Visitors can see a series of cliff dwellings along the clif in Bandelier National Monument as well as a large kiva (circular ceremonial room).
