Day 3: Carbon River to Mowich Lake

Packed up and on the trail again around 8:15. Lots of blue sky, but there are some clouds as well. Today is the day we hike through Spray Park, which is reputed to be an area with spectacular views of the mountain, so we hope for continued good weather. We start out with a steady uphill climb, which wouldn't have been too bad except for the multitude of erosion control steps on the trail, which never seem spaced right for a comfortable stride. The mountain had some very interesting wispy clouds - if you stared, it seemed as if a huge pack of huskies were tearing across the mountainside, churning up the snow. It didn't bode well for us that clouds were beginning to form and we hadn't reached Spray Park yet. We tried to pick up the pace, but the going was tough - as we started the final push to the ridge, the trail was non-existant over the talus and was marked by cairns that seemed rather widely spaced. Sure enough, we reached the top and could see that our views today were going to be limited. We snapped one last picture of the mountain before it was completely engulfed. We did get to see more Mt Rainier wildlife in the form of, what else, marmots. The side trip over to Spray Falls was very worthwhile, a very scenic spot. The side trip to Eagle View was not worth the effort - it was pretty much a view of a cloud bank. Arrived at Mowich Lk campground by 4:00 - certainly not the most scenic camp spot, but what it lacked in views, it made up for in amenities: picnic tables, restrooms, and trash cans. We picked up our food cache and used the bucket that night to hang our food, since last night a mouse got into our hang and feasted on our M&Ms. Too bad we can't haul it with us!
